How often do you wake after a night of partying to the steady thump in your head? The world still seems to spin around? And you are finally awake to face a new day!

Do you make a resolution never to indulge again? Do you blast yourself for landing your body in such a state?

You don’t have to. Yoga has simple solutions for you that can keep the party going!

People come to me ever so often and ask how they can get rid of a hangover and whether yoga has solutions for it. The typical symptoms of a hangover are fatigue, thirst, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, dizziness and bloodshot eyes.

The chemical reaction of alcohol in your system forms a toxic by product called acetaldehyde which causes hangovers; the result is dehydration and depletion of vitamins, especially vitamin C, and other minerals. Infact the headache is due to this dehydration and constriction of blood vessels.

An important tip is to eat a little meal before drinking and to never drink on an empty stomach. And to drink plenty of water after the last drink.

There are simple yogic techniques that are so effective in managing a hangover:

Kunjal Kriya

  • Drink six glasses of water, it should be lukewarm with one teaspoon of salt per liter. Drink the water very fast.
  • When the stomach is full, the urge to vomit will occur automatically. Bend forward 90 degrees.
  • Open the mouth and place the middle and index fingers of the right hand as far back on the tongue as possible and press.
  • The water will gush out from the stomach. Any alcohol remaining in the stomach will come out. Do this kriya before sleeping and after waking also.

Shashankasan (Breathing)

  • Sit in vagrasana.
  • Interlock your fingers on the lower back.
  • Inhale, expand your chest, pull your hands backwards hold for 10 seconds and now exhale bend forward touch your forehead on the mat hold there also for 10 seconds.
  • Repeat this five times.

Bhungasana and Parvatasana (five times with breathing)

  • Lie down on your stomach.
  • Keep your palms next to your chest.
  • Inhale arch up and now exhale lifts your hips upwards and take your head downwards.
  • Your knees should be straight. Repeat this five times with breathing.

Vakrasana

  • Sit with legs outstretched. Bend your right knee and keep your right foot outside next to the left knee.
  • Inhale raise your left arm up now cross your right knee with the left arm and try to hold right ankle with left hand.
  • Take your right hand on the mat and turn backwards. Hold this posture for five breaths. Repeat this other side also.
  • This posture will squeeze your liver and will help to remove impurities.

Clavicular Breathing

  • Sit in a crossed legged posture in chin mudra with hands on the knees.
  • Keep your body and mind relaxed.
  • Inhale a short breath till the throat, now exhale slowly.
  • While exhaling count one, again inhale now exhale count two, keep counting like this till nine.
  • Again start from one same thing till eight keep counting like this until you come to one.

Anulom Vilom Pranayama

  • Sit with crossed legs with the back straight. Use your right hand. Adopt nasika mudra.
  • Close your right nostril with your thumb now inhale slowly through your left nostril now close your left nostril with your fingers and exhale through right nostril
  • Now inhale through your right nostril or close your right nostril with thumb and exhale through left nostril.
  • Do this alternate nostril breathing for five minutes atleast.

When you begin with Kunjal in the morning then follow up with these postures and then the breathing you will feel fresh as a daisy!!! There will be no adverse affects of alchohol on your body. The postures will help to improve blood flow in the body, the breathing techniques will help to oxygenate the blood thus expanding the blood vessels. The alchohol will quickly be eliminated as a result of these.

Rehydration

Since every drink of alcohol takes more liquid out of the body than it puts in it, its important to rehydrate after drinking. Dehydration results in headaches and other malfunctions in the body, alcohol also depletes sugar, salts and minerals. Juices, especially orange juice or water with lemon juice, can also help to replenish vitamin C.

Food

It is essential to eat the right food to cure a hangover, only few foods have been proven to work during a hangover. Firstly bananas because they contain potassium and replenish lost electrolytes. A very helpful thing to do is eat eggs the morning after because they contain cysteine which breaks down the toxic hangover causing acetaldehyde in your system. The most important thing about eating the next morning is that food gives the body energy again to start functioning properly and to process the excess alcohol.

Sleep and Rest.

A long night out will rob your energy and alcohol consumption will deplete your body of important minerals which you need to be fit. Therefore rest is essential to cure a hangover, especially to cure potential headaches and nausea. However never leave a drunken person sleeping unattended and make sure the person sleeps on his side in case the person vomits in their sleep. Most hangovers will be over in 24 hours or less.
